Indicative cases where a Psychiatric Certificate / Certificate is needed:

Recruitment of teachers in schools (including special schools and parallel support teachers) – When appointing or commissioning teachers and recruiting substitutes in public schools (e.g. in Special Education and Training School Units – SSEE) where an original psychiatrist’s report of the last three months is required, certifying that the teacher is healthy and able to perform teaching duties, in accordance with the circulars of the Ministry of Education for teacher appointments.

Appointment of permanent civil servants (e.g. civil servants, judicial officials). Each candidate for appointment to the Civil Service must submit a medical certificate from a general pract itioner or general practitioner and a psychiatrist, certifying that his/her state of health allows him/her to perform the duties of the position, in accordance with the Civil Service Code (Law 3528/2007, as in force after Law 4210/2013).

Licences related to explosives and fireworks. For the lawful marketing or use of hazardous materials where a psychiatric examination is required. A licence to trade or purchase explosives, fireworks and other pyrotechnic articles, such as pyrotechnic signals (fireworks) for boat hazards, requires the presentation of a certificate from a psychiatrist confirming the mental health of the applicant, in accordance with Law 2168/1993 on weapons and explosives.

Issue/renewal of a special licence to drive a taxi or hired vehicle with driver. For the issue or renewal of a licence to drive a public passenger car (taxi) or to drive a fully leased private passenger car (P.P.C.) and to carry out the activity of leasing private passenger cars with driver, in accordance with the decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transport of the Republic of Cyprus. Transport A/79574/5488/2017 for the licences of taxi/e.i.x. drivers with driver.

Renewal of driving licences for elderly drivers. Drivers over the age of 80, in order to renew their driving licence, are subject to an additional medical check, including an examination by a psychiatrist (in addition to GP and ophthalmologist examinations) to ensure that they meet minimum standards of mental capacity for safe driving.
